The Top 5 Skincare Ingredients To AVOID

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

What we put on our skin not only massively effects our appearance but can effect our health too.

Some skincare products have been linked to hormonal and reproductive problems and, when 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream, this makes sense, right?

But with so many chemicals in so many skincare products, which specifically should we be avoiding?

We're going to outline the 5 main ones in this article...

1. Aluminum

Despite being widely used in skincare products, aluminum is widely known as a toxin. As well as being linked to increased risk for a number of diseases, aluminum can accelerate signs of aging and skin damage.

2. Parabens

We have already talked about the negative effects of parabens over on our Instagram page (@aishaemilyofficial). To recap, parabens are preservatives that can irritate the skin and have been linked to reproductive problems in women. What's more, parabens actually make skin (specifically oily skin) worse!

Look out for Benzylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Methylparaben and Propylparaben on your labels.

3. Phthalates

Phthalates are another type of preservatives that you need to look out for. They've also been linked to reproductive and hormone based issues.

4. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

PEG is an ingredient that breaks down the skin's natural barrier and can disrupt its moisture balance.

5. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

The damaging effects of sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfate are often spoken about... and for good reason.

Not only these ingredients increase skin sensitivity and clog pores but they can actually cause acne and allergic reactions, like eczema.

Conclusion:

Whilst you can look out for the names of these chemicals on your product labels, the easiest way to avoid putting damaging chemicals on your skin is to buy only organic skincare.
